Hi, I’m Maria Laura Murgia, founder of Gentle Paws.
Originally from Alghero, Sardinia (Italy), I have been living in Canada since 2018 and I am currently based in Kelowna, British Columbia.
I hold a diploma in Early Childhood Education and Special Needs Education, with additional training in Montessori pedagogy and animal-assisted approaches (with guinea pigs).
Through my professional experience with children and their diverse learning needs, I have developed a gentle, nature-based approach that encourages empathy, observation, and meaningful connection with animals.
I am currently continuing my specialization in Animal-Assisted Interventions through the University of Michigan.
My philosophy is simple:
Well-being grows through respect, meaningful relationships, and a genuine connection with animals and nature.
“Dogs are not the only animals who can inspire connection. Guinea pigs and rabbits can too.”

Meet the Animal Ambassadors of Gentle Paws
Rocky, a calm guinea pig, lives in a free-roam environment and has traveled across Canada as a curious little explorer.
As a gentle prey animal, Rocky invites participants to slow down, observe, and connect, while discovering respect and curiosity through calm interactions.
